On the long list of drugs to be concerned about, caffeine generally doesn’t make the cut. This proves to be especially true for the modern day high school student. Coffee in the morning, a Coke with lunch maybe a Red Bull to get a head start on homework after school and another soda to make it through the late night Khan grind. It’s fair to say most of us have some sort of relationship with caffeine.

“I would just sleep through the whole day if I didn’t have my coffee,” junior Aimee Garlisch said.

63% of all Bellevue students claim to drink at least one caffeinated drink a day, and over half of those who drink it on a regular basis blame their use on a lack of sleep or purely out of habit.

More energetic, more productive, more focused. Seems like a great thing right? Well besides the A you got on that one history test after studying all night the day before, the effects of caffeine can actually take a harsh toll on the teenage mind and body.

Caffeine causes uneven blood pressure and increases the release of acid in your stomach which causes heart burn. Doesn’t seem that bad right? Well as soon as you decide you need a break from the daily routine, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), withdrawal symptoms include severe headaches, depression, muscle pain and irritability.

“I don’t even want to think about what would happen to my grades if I stopped,” junior Cole Ramos said

When getting a Starbucks gift card becomes the equivalent to winning the lottery you know you have a problem. But are we really to blame? Caffeine is a culture. When every morning, we wake up to our parents downing a cup of coffee and our first three teachers flaunting a Starbucks mug throughout the period. The typical ‘Don’t talk to me before my coffee’ echoes through the halls in our caffeinated society.

Bellevue has a drug problem, and to the surprise of most it is not marijuana or whatever crazy drugs kids are doing nowadays. It’s caffeine. So every morning ask your self, do I really need my Venti Iced Skinny Hazelnut Macchiato, Sugar-Free Syrup, Extra Shot, Light Ice, No Whip?
