For 17 years, Jon Stewart has allowed us to sit back and simply laugh at the comical state of our nations’ politics and media. The Daily Show masterfully unveils to its viewers that the antics taking place in Washington D.C. are all too similar to a Keeping up with the Kardashians episode. Stewart presents a comedic style that lets an entire nation, not only laugh at others, but laugh at themselves. On February 10, Stewart announced to his live studio audience as well as his millions of viewers that he would be leaving his role as the host of The Daily Show.
Stewart gave an unorthodox yet extremely emotional announcement of his retirement on Tuesdays’ show.
“I’m not going to try and sum up what this place has meant to me… I’m not going to miss being on television every day. I’m going to miss coming here every day,” said Stewart as he began to tear up along with his audience.
He then went on to present a heartfelt salute to all of his viewers.
“I thank you. For watching it, for hate watching it, whatever reason you were tuning in for,” said Stewart.
The transition will take some time. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart will continue to produce laughs for the majority of this year. Comedy Central has also confirmed that another host will take over when he is gone.
No matter where Stewart ends up, we will never forget the entire genre of comedy he created. He deserves all of our support through the rest of his career. Because no one can make us laugh at ourselves like Jon Stewart.
